  1. At tardebege heading up need fuel & ,it's that time, coal . anyone know if there is a coalboat in the vicinity much prefer to support them if I can as a CC I see them as an essential part of life on board . 👍
  2. My wee 1968 Springer-effect office boat has a hole. Actually, she has lots of holes and needs complete overplating or new sides. I'm looking for cheap options near Bham to give another lease of life, or innovative bodges to keep her afloat a few more years. Context: Went into dry dock for a check and blacking at Hockley Port. Hull deemed thin and in need of overplating 'soon, in next few years'. I found one proper hole underneath which was plated yesterday morning, but then more leaks appeared as we refloated her - looks like weld on the V has bent and cracked under boat's own weight where it touched the blocks, and there were 2 other small holes that I could find when I took up the floor, so probably more. Plus some very deep nearly-hole pits which wont last long. I'm now beached on our Hockley Port slipway with a bilge pump going so water doesn't come over the floorboards while I ponder options - will be OK here for a few weeks but not indefinitely. What would be the ballpark cost of overplating or replacing everything below the rubbing strakes on a 20ft V bottom boat? It is not a Springer, but looks like one - it has been cobbled together over the years from pieces, and doesn't necessarily have to stay V-bottomed. Any recommendations for people to ring? The guy at Caggys' cant do it, and Tony Fryer at Hawne Basin is away till Friday week - will call him then. But Hawne basin is full on hardstanding at the mo apparently. Icknield Port Loop has just closed We may be able to get it out on slipway with trailer - where would I start asking about that? The winch no longer works on this slipway, so it'd need someone to haul out w vehicle too. So it doesn't necessarily need a 'boat' welder, just someone who could do it on hardstanding. Possible bodges we brainstormed yesterday Concreting bottom as a fix - might sort the bottom and give much needed ballast but not reach the pits above the floor level on the sides. Wrapping with something? Glass fibre etc? Not viable over bitumen I guess Park it in a metal floating tray (the boat has no engine and goes nowhere) The office boat is a luxury - cost me a grand to buy 2.5 years ago and another grand or so to fit out over six months of weekends with a friend, and I have to pay for moorings etc, so I can't pour unlimited dosh into it. My thought is 2-3 grand tops, but if it made it resaleable later, maybe a tiny bit more. Default is scrap, but I love the boat and don't want to. Really annoying thing is that when I bought it knowing it was mainly 3-4mm I wanted to get it overplated while I had it back to steel and *everyone* and their dog told me not to worry - if it had floated for 45 years it would be fine, esp as it will only ever be static, don't waste the money etc etc. Fitting it out was a fun project the first time but the thought of ripping it all ut and doing it all over again - and paying for it again - fills me with dread. AND I've just paid Sherborne Wharf prices to beautifully black and weld a sieve! Grump!! All suggestions - and sympathy - much appreciated Pic of boat, slipway, and sample of hull before blacking, attached.

  4. Hi there I will be moving my boat up to Birmingham for a new job. We live aboard and are wondering where the best moorings are? My partner will be working in the city centre and I'll be in solihull. We have 1 car Thanks
  5. Hi everyone, If you're reading this, thank you! I have just stumbled across this site while investigating this evening, and as I am struggling to find information elsewhere I would really really appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice and tell me whether this idea I've had is viable. At the end of next year, I will (hopefully!) be off to University. This has been quite a scary thought for me for some time, mainly because I am really something of a recluse and the idea of having a kitchen and living space and in some places a bathroom and bedroom shared with strangers frightens me. I am also very attached to my pets, and I don't like the thought of leaving them behind as one is required to do in student accommodation. When my parents were young and still together, they lived aboard a canal boat with my older brother as well. While I was born later when they'd moved into a house and so have never lived aboard a canal boat, I've heard a lot about it from the three of them and from my dad's friends who live on the canal, and about a week ago I realised that this could be an option for me when I go to university. I've done some research and found that you can get a smaller boat for under £10,000, sometimes only £6000. However, I've struggled to find out about moorings - my dad mentioned two week free moorings that he could use when he had his boat, but that was twenty years ago and there is no mention of that online. A lot of the moorings I find as well seem to only be for holidays; while I would go home at the end of term, the boat would really be my main residence. I'd really like to know more about mooring costs or whether it is possible to moor a boat in some places for free. Also, other living costs; would I have to spend a lot on fuel and electricity and such? Particularly useful would be information about moorings near universities of Warwick (Coventry), York, Bristol, Oxford, Birmingham, Nottingham, Durham and Lancaster, so if anyone lives around there I would love to hear from you! And just generally, I'd like to know more about what it's like to live aboard a canal boat. What are the most challenging things about it, and what are the things you enjoy the most? Thank you. Rosie

  7. Wonderful video I've just been sent discussing Council plans to develop round Gas St Basin http://www.macearchive.org/Archive/Title/atv-today-05051967-gas-street-basin/MediaEntry/33235.html
  8. Hi, Regular hirer here - we've been hiring for the last 20 years - just havent quite got round to buying a boat! Anyway, in that 20 years, we've never moored in Birmingham city centre - but we plan to do so whilst doign the Warwickshire ring this Easter. My question is how busy are the moorings likely to be - and will I need to get there extra early? I'll be setting out from Turners Green, 18 miles and 20 locks away, so it will be a bit of a full-on day. Thoughts?
  9. This was our neighbour's home last night in town. The charred and waterlogged (due to fire brigade dousing) wreck is currently being pumped out and excavated back on the moorings - they have lost the lot. http://www.birminghamupdates.com/two-dogs-rescued-from-a-barge-fire-near-the-icc-in-the-city-centre/ Luckily a.) dogs and they are safe and b.) the shell seems sound as the fire was dealt with quickly. People are rallying round to help. But it is very very scary to see first hand what can happen. Presumed cause was the solid fuel stove that overheated and set light to the back board, which wasn't fire board. This is very very common - just because a fire surround has pretty tiles, it does not mean it is safely constructed. Behind those tiles can scorch. As we enter the season of nice toasty fires, please do service and check appliances, and check the smoke and CO alarms too.
