  1. Have a solar installation where the controller can handle two battery banks, but only if those banks are never joined. Mine are joined when I switch the 1,2, both switch to both (when charging via the engine) so I cannot use the two bank capability. I currently have the solar charging the domestic bank only. I appreciate that I could have it charge all batteries when the switch is on “both” as it would see them as a single bank but this won’t work when I am away from the boat (not a live-aboard) as I like to leave the isolation switch in the off position. Thus when away my starter battery is not benefiting from solar. Above has not been a problem so far but is there a way around this limitation? It may well be the best option is to live with what I have but it does seem a bit of a waste
  2. Ello folks My 3 way electrolux has been patched up several times over the years - I think its time to replace I'm a ccer - Usings 12v for the fridge was always too heavy a drain even with 3 80w solar panels so I used Gas - I was happy enough with this set up - The aim though would be renewable energy solar or wind for all except the darkest months - I sometimes watch a film, use some LED lights and my rad is powered by a pump - I would say i'm a fairly light user but the fridge is one step too far for my set up, I want to avoid running the engine all the time. Does anyone have a set up that works well - Solar maybe wind - A very economical fridge they would recommend? Cheers! Martin
  3. Ok everyone we have a problem and I need to harvest the power of the hive mind... Problem: Instant and continuous Hot water Notes: 1) Preferably without having to use LPG (can of worms, as we had an instantaneous water heater from China but it was cooking the bathroom ceiling, and we would rather avoid having mess around with the gas or pay too much) 2) Preferably without having to use the electrickery (obviously we all have a limited battery) 3) I have thought about a long black coiled tube on the roof (solar hot water) but I am worried that the heat will run out quite quickly 4) I have thought of a kettle element in a watering can Anyone got any other more unusual ideas/ experience we would be very grateful? All the best Fergus

  6. Advise on Solar Setup would be greatly appeciated as we are going round in circles but this is what we have so far. We have 3 solar panels 250 watt ( Pmx 250w- Vmp 30.3v - Imp 8.24A - Voc 37.9V - Isc 8.85A) which we are connecting in parallel. The run from the furthest panel to combiner box is 5.5metres (that includes the 4mm2 cable attached to the solar panel which is about 1 metre long) so we intend to use 6mm2 cable from the MC4 connectors. Would that be ok or can the run be longer? From the combiner box to the mppt controller (outback 80 flexmax) we have a 3metre run and we intend to use 16mm2 cable. Would this be ok? From the controller to batteries which is around 1metre we will use 25mm2 cable. Is that ok? Now we are wondering what size fuse to use and if we need some sort of isolating switch? Can we get fuses suitable for this job at car spare places? Also will this set up accommodate a further 4th solar panel in the future if necessary? The panels are attached to steel roof of the boat via aluminium brackets do we need to earth the panels? Many thanks for any help.
  7. We have a 70W solar panel on the boat which links to a Solsum 6.6 box, then off to the batteries. Previously the led's would flash green to indicate power from the son, just recently it's showing a solid red light indicating no power fro the panel, or under 11.8. This afternoon I tested with a voltmeter the connections on the panel, then the connection going Into the Solsum box. Panel was measuring 18+v as a was the external connection into the Solsum box. I assume this means the panel and cables are OK. Fuse on that Solsum box is good too. Not sure where to look next to try to work out where the problem is. Any assistance gratefully received. Currently cruising the Thames Ring moored in Slapton on the GU so though MK on Wednesday.
  8. I write this in the hope that others will see the light! Being a liveaboard I have been on a mission to reduce power usage. I run a 62ft trad boat with led lighting, led 240v, hurricane heater, shurflo 11.6gpm pump, plus shower drain box. Along side the usual I have a couple of tablets, the missus has a laptop and her obligatory hairdryer a d bits. (say no more) I run a victron multiplus 1900w inverter/charger. Victron mppt 75/15 regulator. I now run 2 x LG 305w b3 9a solar panels. Previous to this the solar panels were 2x 200w 5 amp panels The battery system is basic. Just 3x 110ah albions plus a starter. We ran the 200w panels for a year with the inverter charger in he background For a month now I've been monitoring these new panels and I'm stunned by the difference. The new system yield I'd 1.2kwh to 1.6kwh! I physicaly can't store that much! When we had all that rain the other day I was still receiving 5 amp. It sits at the moment around 14.6a thru the day this is limited by the 15a regulator which will soon be replaced. I should point out that the panels are mounted flat on the roof. They aren't aimed at the sun. The panels are house panels. 24v and the latest technology. Which has helped reduce the thickness of cabling required and also reduces current loss overy long distance. The panels you might think would be too big but there is still space to walk down the sides of the roof. With the previous panels I couldn't get away from needing a 240v hookup. With the new panels I have been off grid from day one. Even the good lady can't upset the system... The panels are LG x-mono b3. They allow sun to penetrate between the cells and reflect onto the rear of the cell aswell as the front. This allows an amp increase of up to 9.52a per panel. As opposed to 6 to 8amps. I hope this information helps someone as I and others in our basin have been thoroughly amazed by the changes Something to point out here is that these panels are available in ones and twos. Go to the main importers and ask them for any spares off the months order. They will import a container full at a time but 99% of the time the orders they have will leave a few spare. They're no good to a house install in 1s or 2s but ideal for us boaters. The companes will give you favourable rates in. Half price if not more discount! It makes this option really affordable. Yes you may spend a bit more.on a. Mppt regulator but trust me.. the difference is phenomenal. Dont go for the cheap regulators as the algorithms used aren't clever. I swear by victron. They really do what it says on the tin. If I can be of help or you think I've missed something then let me know and I will endeavour to assist or update.
  9. Thanks to Matty, now upgraded the solar with a 245w Panasonic panel. Anyone want a 90w cleversolar panel? Collect from Crick. Size 130 X 42cm. No reasonable offer refused.
  10. Hi All, First off apologies if this is already covered but every search I do keeps freaking the forum out, producing no results and instigating flood control. Apart from that its going very well. I've just bought 4 x 230AH 12v Monolith Semi traction Batteries. I intend to eventually hook up Solar power and I intend to get a smart alternator regulator, probably the alternator regulator first. Something like this: http://www.shop.sterling-power.com/acatalog/ProSplitR.pdf Solar panel wise I hope to get 2 x290W panels with a 60A MPPT controller. Am I better off having 2 banks of 2 x 230AH 12v Batteries or 1 bank of 4 batteries. Everything on the boat is run off 12V. i have an inverter but don't would only have to use it once in a blue moon. I had originally thought of having 2 banks. the first for essentials and the second for luxuries. Essentials: Bilge Pump Water Pump Shower Pump 2 x 12V lights Headlight Horn Luxuries: 12V Fridge (in summer) 12V TV laptop via 12v car charger USB Phone Charging Car Stereo, Amp and Sub Additional Lighting Having 2 banks I feel like I can run down my luxury bank without worrying about whether I can have a shower in the morning, but another mate suggested that with a big enough bank I'd be less likely to run out in the first place. Another suggestion was that having a fall back system is always good on a boat, maybe i should just put both banks on one of those big switches that lets you use 1,2 or both. I've a sneaking suspicion I've just answered my own question, but I've typed it now so never mind Any thoughts would be much appreciated, particularly a link to a wiring diagram for 3 banks (Starter battery is a 110AH sealed battery), a 12v switch, a 3 output alternator regulator and an mppt controller. Cheers, Ben Heron
