Hi, the BSS says that cables between a battery and - another battery, or - an inverter over 1000W, or - a master switch, - etc, should be "sufficiently" big: "must be approximately 25mm2". To me, "approximately" means "as long as it's really safe". With two leisure batteries of 110Ah in parallel, is it safe to have a 16mm2 cable between them? I have seen 16mm2 cables on several of my friends boats. I am wondering whether I should propose to change their cables to 25mm2. Also, if a cable to the master switch is 16mm2 and has a 50A fuse, that should be safe and hence pass BSS, right? PS: Woops, I cannot change the title anymore, it should be "25mm2". Mistyped.

I've acquired a SigMar diesel stove to fit in my small Dutch Barge. The simplest solution to providing a fuel supply would be to install a day dank which I'd fill from a can. It used to be the case that the BSS allowed a day tank of less than 27 litres to be vented to the cabin by a small hole (in its filler cap) rather than having an external vent through the deck but the recent changes suggest this may not still be acceptable. does anyone know the truth of this, please? I'd envisage a tank of about 12 litres, close to but not directly above the stove, linked by copper tube with compression fittings, with a tap on the outlet of the tank and another close to the stove. Ideally the tank filler cap would incorporate a filter of some sort. Any comments? Anyone know where I could buy such a beast, or have one made (close to Surrey, for preference)? Thanks in anticipation. David

Has any kind member any knowledge of fitting and using a large site tool storage locker to act as a Gas Locker? I have located several likely candidates e.g. https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/4-site-van-vault and if I vent this via a welded on pipe to the gunwales and weld the feet to the foredeck, do people think this would be compliant? I would value some feedback on this topic as although a competent engineer, I am new to narrow boat fit-outs. Cheers Richard

We (CWDF) have many threads related to safety that are posted under 'General Boating'. I believe that safety demands its own category. We all want to enjoy boating on canals, rivers and estuaries, often with our families and loved ones, but we must understand and minimise the risks. Like many other pastimes (e.g. climbing, skiiing, flying, walking etc.) boating does involve risks that can easily be minimised. The BSS Certificate provides some re-assurance but there are many other 'best practice' procedures that may provide a happy ending to a cruise. Alan

Hi everyone We're fitting out our boat and are deciding whether to run the 12v wiring outside the walls in conduit or behind the walls. Conduit would be great for access but expensive so I want to know if we run them behind does it also need conduit?/can the cabling sit against the insulation or does it need a certain amount of gap? I've had a look at the BSS handbook but its doesn't give much detail and cant get in touch with any of our sparkys right now. Got loads of work to do but am being held up by not knowing what to do first, walls or electrics.. I'd love to hear your opinions/thoughts/experiences/BSS knowledge.. Thanks in advance

Hello everybody, Is it possible to use mushroom vents as part of the fixed ventilation calculation to meet the BSS requirements given the area that the manual says you need based on output of your appliances? I've seen ones that seem to screw up and down - is that an optional thing, or do they all just screw down to a 'minimum' opening? I'd like to use mushroom vents to make up the fixed ventilation requirement as I think they'll be less drafty then high-level square lourve vents. It'd be nice to have some 'optional' ventilation in the summer too! Can you get ones that close fully and open too? Thanks! Patrick

I would appreciate recommendations for an examiner local to the Kinver/Stourport area as this will be the first inspection since we have moved to this area. and I need to get this done in the next couple of months. Thanks

I phoned a BSS man and when asked if I live aboard was told that he could not do it. What's this about ? Leisure or live aboard the safety risk is the same .

Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows whether a home build boat needs to comply with both the BSS and the RCD rules? Kind regards, Boater 123

transported from another thread in general boating I have attached a pdf (161kb) all the checks that apply to fire extinguishers including those related to the gauge and to any expiry/replace by dates (Not warranty or guarantee dates). By assessing the extinguisher as found on the boat, it should be possible to decide whether an extinguisher and/or the compliment of extinguishers meet the compliance options. These are the key themes individual fire fighting capacity total fire fighting capacity certification/attestation mark condition of casing and trigger gauge indication weight indication position/ability to deploy location visibility HTH Apologies to Big Col for the lack of response earlier, I'll look into that and let you know.
