  1. Ah, yes. All good advice. Right, I think i'll have a go at cleaning the fins. I've been inside the engine a little so I know where they are. I can also have a go at replacing the fuel filters and draining off the water accumulation from the tank. Thanks so much for your advice guys, I'll keep you informed as to how I get on. Joe
  2. Thanks Alan, This feels like good information. I have a Lister SR2. It keeps cutting out, I think it's over heating. I'm trying to narrow down what the issue might be. I should probably get someone to look at it really, but finding a good mechanic in the london area is tough. Joe
  3. Hello all. I was told by a mechanic that red diesel and diesel fro a petrol station is bad for old engines. Is this total nonsense? Something to do with modern diesel being made with crap oils, like cooking fat etc. If this is the case, does anybody know about where to get "good" diesel for old engines? Or a good additive to put in diesel to help the quality of it? This guy talked about putting a dash of oil in with the diesel. Thanks for your help and please excuse my naivety.
  4. Very simple question here: which grade of oil do I need to put into my LISTER SR2?
  5. Thanks Richard. I'm currently getting in there with a coat hanger. Joe
  6. I'm attempting to clean the cooling fins on my SR2. I've taken off the exhaust, the air filter and the cooling air cowling. I'm now a bit unsure what I should be doing, whether I've found the fins or not. I've got a photo but there seems to be no way of uploading it to this post. Do I need the tool as suggested in the manual? I can't find that to buy online. Any help welcome.
  7. I'm just going to throw up a couple of links of what models I've been looking at, see what you guys think: http://generators.co.uk/Product/0000000700/Hyundai_HY1000SI http://www.thegreenreaper.co.uk/Generators/Portable_Suitcase_Generators/Kipor-IG1000-Digital-Generator-with-Inverter-Technology.html http://www.thegreenreaper.co.uk/Generators/Portable_Suitcase_Generators/Gardencare_TG1000i_Portable_Petrol_Generator.html http://thepowersite.co.uk/evopower-sf1000-1kw-inverter-generator/ http://www.justgenerators.co.uk/pages/yamahaEF1000is.htm They all seem good on these websites, whether they are in reality is another thing. I'm thinking hyundai by what some of you guys are saying. But yamaha boasts the quietest in its field.

  9. Obviously Honda are the ones. But does anybody have any knowledge on the cheaper kipor, hyundai, gardencare versions of a similar range product? I'm in the confusion of Internet searching and would love some human perspective. Thanks
  10. Thanks for all your help guys.
  11. I must point out that my system is very basic. I start the lister engine with the crank arm. But to get the charging system to work I have to switch the starter motor safety switch on. I have no warning lights on the alternator. I know, it's pretty weird. I don't get it really.
  12. Yeah, it's a safety key or whatever but it doesn't spring back so you can leave it on. My electrics are a bit weird. I'm charging from the engine with an alternator that usually gets me 14.4v going into it. When I'm trying to charge them now it gets up to 13.5v but drops rapidly to about 10.4 when I turn off the engine. So am I to think its not all over?

  14. This might sound really stupid. I left my starter motor on and drained my two numax marine mv26mf 100ah Batteries to about 4 volts. Are they completely dead or can I put anything in them to bring them back to life? I tried charging them for a few hours and got them up to about 10v but it feels like they are going to drop rapidly.
  15. Hello, I've been looking at purchasing new 12v lights for my 45ft narrow boat. I've currently got a couple of halogen strips that are ok but i want to replace the whole system with LEDs. I was wondering if anybody had any good tips on what types of fittings and where to buy, to get a pretty good general lighting effect? I've been looking at G4 and MR16 LED replacement bulbs for spots, but i'm concerned lots of these will only give me localised light in certain areas. Baddie the pirate has a 130mm diameter SMD downlight with 200 lumens for £52, anybody had any experience with this type, or any similar downlights? If anybody has any info about what they have achieved, websites to look at or photos of examples that would be most excellent. Thanks for your time anyway.
