  1. Maybe the confusion has arisen due to the different regulations between the EA and BW?
  2. LOL.....me too!! I'm lucky I suppose in that I've done a fair bit of boxing and idiots such as this don't bother me, in fact I'd quite look forward to the practice!!
  3. Hi Karen. I've PM'd you in reply
  4. Hello everyone, Reading through these boards I have more than once come across the advice to 'not mention that you'll be living onboard as your main residence' or words to that effect. I must admit to being somewhat confused. I was under the perhaps mistaken assumption that if you paid for a mooring in a marina that you would be perfectly free to live aboard should you wish. Maybe some marinas allow this and others not? If anyone could clarify this one way or another I would appreciate it. NB I was hoping to obtain a mooring within the next few years in the Ely area of Cambridgeshire. Many thanks
  5. Hi Karen, That's exactly where I would like to be moored when I eventually get my boat in a few years time. Would you be kind enough to let me know what the process was in obtaining a liveaboard mooring in Ely? Many thanks
  6. Thank you very much to all who have offered advice and their opinions. It has given me plenty to think about.
  7. Yes I know, although I wouldn't have much choice really as would be returning to work and keeping a house plus a boat isn't an option.
  8. If I bought it would definately be second hand, probably around the 5-10 year old range. Any idea what typical brokers fees are?
  9. I am hoping to have between 4-6 months career break either this year or in 2012 and am seeking some advice from experienced boaters. The two options I am looking at are either a long term hire through Escape the Rat Race (etrr.co.uk) or to purchase my own boat with a view to selling it after 4-6 months. Etrr.co.uk costs are approx £1000pm which includes maintenance(not fuel) although the costs do increase to around £1500pm for the summer period. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
  10. Do you think it's possible to get round the Black Country Ring in six days with a crew of two in early November?
  11. Thanks for all the replies folks. A boatbuilder at the recent IWA festival informed me that there was no more internal room between a trad and a semi due to the 'extra space' being taken up by the engine. From the replies it would seem that he is incorrect and there indeed IS more inside a trad
  12. Exactly. If a man had spoken to a woman with me like that (even if she was in the wrong) I'd've insisted on an instant apology in order to extract himself from the difficulty he now found himself!! But then I'm a boxing trainer so lucky enough to back myself. I realise that not everyone has the same confidence in themselves, but rest assured that such unpleasant people will, at some point, say the wrong thing at the wrong time
  13. Probably a daft question, but does a Trad stern boat offer more internal room, or is this merely negated by the engine being 'inside' the boat as opposed to under the stern? Also, can you get Trad stern boats with a 'reserve layout' or do all, by defination, have a boatman's cabin, followed by engine room etc? Maximum space is important to me when I come to purchase my first narrowboat, which will also be my home. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of both stern types would be appreciated. Cheers David
  14. Thanks for that Alan. I'm trying to work out what is the optimum age of the boat to buy. Sounds like a two year old boat would represent pretty good value(all things being equal) NB. Earlier in the thread someone mentioned hull quality. I understand the rationale, but how is hull quality gauged, and can it be only be done by an expert?
  15. I appreciate my original question might have been misleading. I was merely using those figures hypothetically. What I was trying to calculate is the rate of depreciation on new boats. Am I right in thinking that you'd be looking at roughly 10% in year one and 10% in year two, followed by a leveling off of depreciation? If this is approximately correct I would deduce my best bet is to look at buying a boat of two years old as opposed to new
