  1. Nick D, I've just PM'd you some info Pete

  3. Nothing secret, just some info on where to moor and things to do in Leicester and environs. As well as the usual stuff about how bad it is and how everybody who comes through Leicester gets bombed, shot at or gets their boat vandalised. Because we're all drug crazed vandals in Leicester.
  4. I've just PM'd you some info on the ring
  5. Tony, Like many people I weigh up the risks before I do anything and so may walk through and may not walk through, it is my choice. Assuming that it is unsafe because somebody appears to be a drunk or a drug user is taking a rather stereotypical view of life. Boaters on the River Soar will encounter a bunch of 'drinkers' at Lime Kiln Lock and whilst initially it appears to be intimidating, they help boaters with the locking and clear up all of their litter at the end of the day. If a call to the police, by a female, reporting intimidation has resulted in the police not attending or refusing to attend then I would have thought that it would have deserved raising with the relevant authorities.
  6. Tony, My point was that "One swallow does not a summer make" and people are only too keen to persuade boaters not to moor somewhere because of 1 incident, however unpleasant, instead of looking at the vast number of boaters who moor there with no trouble at all. As you are probably aware Leicester has a terrible reputation amongst boaters, totally unfounded in my opinion, and fortunately one which seems to be changing. Being dissuaded to moor or dissuading others to moor based on 1 incident amongst 100's of non-incidents seems a little over cautious to me. Report the facts by all means but allow others to make their own minds up, if we were only moored where there had been no trouble at all our options would be few and far between.
  7. Tony, whilst your daughter in law may have been very shaken by the experience, is one incident enough to advise boaters not to stop. I was moored at Foxton when the lock keeper was threatened with an axe because he had locked the gates up at the end of the day. Would you risk mooring at Foxton based on that?
  8. I've heard that C&RT want to get some permanent moorers there as well as visitors. The idea is that the permanents will provide a bit of security. There should be a water point there but you might need a machete to get to it
  9. Heading on latest stoppage in Loughborough Notice Alert River Soar Location: Loughborough Bason Visitor Moorings Wednesday 9 May 2018 until Sunday 13 May 2018 23:59 Does anybody know where the Bason is the International Guild of Knot Tyers will be there and I wouldn't want to get in their way?
  10. I have a bog standard fog light but I mounted it upside down as the function of a fog light is to illuminate the road just in front of the car. Fitting it upside down illuminates the doof and sides of the tunnel just in front of the boat. I've never had any complaints.

  12. Dave you're quite right some boaters prefer not to have the assistance of the volunteer and as you can see they should always ask first. Nick I congratulate you, this is the first time I've been called sensitive and only reinforces my comment that you don't know me.
  13. As I recall the original post was about a volunteer lock keeper, volocky as some call them volcky as others call them, raising a paddle n Cranfleet lock without the say so of the helm. How that relates to the extended discussion on different locks and paddle raising techniques employed on the various designs of lock and their impact on boats of different lengths is a mystery to me, but I'll leave that for others to decide. I'm sorry to disappoint you but I'm afraid I'm not a 'modern person', as you have seen fit to call me and to me the fact that you have resorted to a personal attack after one post and without knowing me to my mind shows a degree of intolerance on your part. I've not participated in the discussion because I had nothing to add but I was interested in the subject. However this soon waned when I found I was having to wade through all the extraneous stuff, hence my post. It possible that my view of volunteer lock keepers may be a bit biased as I am one myself. Therefore, I can quite categorically state that during training I was told to 1) Always ask the helm if they want assistance. 2) Always check with the helm if it's OK to raise paddles etc. Now I'm not saying that this always happens but I don't recall not following these steps. Of course I'm not saying that volunteer in question was guilty/not guilty but before people go flying off the handle and making all sorts of accusations maybe the facts should be known first. Was he distracted by something. a wasp or bee? Does he have any personal problems or some weighty thing on his mind? We all make mistakes and in my experience the ones who shout the loudest about other's errors are those who cannot take it when it is coming in their direction.
  14. Question to the mods. Does the forum software have the ability to create a branch in topics? That way when a topic veers away from the OP the mods can move these entries off to a separate, but kind of joined, thread. This means that personal ding dongs or spats can be held away from the 'meat' of the OP leaving those of us who were interested in the main idea of the topic to view it without having to trawl through endless 'he said', 'she said' posts.
