  1. How awful. If they and the dog were all found dead it sounds like Carbon Monoxide.
  2. I've a "petfloat" too for my Rotty. Testing it out this weekend on the Thames. (I'd show you a pic, but don't know how to download a pic from PC into the message)
  3. Sounds like a good idea. You can buy buoyancy jackets / life jackets for pets on-line. They range from about £19 to £50. I'm thinking of getting one for my dog as I'm taking him on a sailing barge next weekend. I should imagine some kind of collar with an alarm that goes off if the collar becomes submerged in water shouldn't be too hard to design.
  4. A bit pretentious of the author, I think, but hey, sounds like a good book (As we son't say 'bandito', why use an Italian pluralisation? Should really be 'bandits'?)
  5. Thanks for the replies Bottle and Dutch. Are winter residential moorings available? I've been doing a lot of marina visits lately (as part of my research into living aboard) and there seems to be very long waiting lists for residential moorings. Perhaps I've not been asking the right question. Perhaps I should be asking about winter residential moorings?
  6. I've been looking on the BW map. I've a few questions that someone here may be able to help me with (there doesn't seem to be a key or much guidence on the BW map). Forgive me if some of these sound stupid! 1) If the map says "Moorings (48 hours max)" at a certain spot but nothing else, how is this moorings useful? If there are moorings with no services (no pumpout / water etc), why is it any more useful that a random point at the side of the canal with a spike in the ground? I may be missing some point here. 2) If the map says "Moorings (max 1 hour, 20 metres)" does this imply there are services there that you can use but you cannot hang around? The icon I'm interested (on the map) doesn't indicate there are services apart from "Moorings" (when you click on it) and so doesn't seem to make sense. 3) If the map indicates a service point and this has has "Elsan" but not "pumpout" does this mean you can only manually dump waste? 4) If a services says "BW Key required" does this mean there needs to be a BW employee on site in order for you to access the toilets etc or does it mean you need to apply for a key? Thanks
  7. For the post, you can rent a PO Box number and have your mail directed to a local post office (£56 per year). http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?c...ediaId=14400223 You will probably need a cooperative friend or relative who will let you use their address as an original fixed address in order to set it up though. Once set up, their letter box shouldn't be troubled again. Not sure about the banking stuff. Again, probably need a friend or relative who will let you use their address to start with, then the PO box number could kick in for statement deliveries etc.
  8. How to Cc-ers cope in the winter months? Is it possible to get stranded on a fairly short length of canal at short notice? Has anyone ever experienced this? Thanks.
  9. Good point. It may cost a fair amount to transport to and from a landsite but would probably save that money on liscence and mooring costs.
  10. I'm interested in the discussion on man-weeks here and I'm looking for some advice. I don't want to do any engine stuff myself and to this end I think a sailaway (possibly a lined one) would be my best option. Any thoughts on man hours for fitting out a lined sailaway? I'm giving some thought to buying a sailaway from Liverpool boat company ltd. Their spec is... Hull with windows, doors, water (untreated) and fuel tanks, gas locker, deck fittings and ballast. Isuzu diesel engine and matched gearbox installed, to suit the size of your boat. Cheers
  11. That's interesting. I'm looking into transport costs myself in case I do go ahead. I guess you spent £1200 for delivery to the land you used. Did it cost you this much for delivery to the water afterwards? Cheers.
  12. I've been looking at sailaways over the past few weeks and I'm thinking of doing exactly the same. I'll be watching this thread with interest A friend who has a farm with plenty of land has said I could do the fit-out at his place. Giving it some serious thought now!
  13. I guess live-aboards with a permanent mooring address get to vote in local elections as well as national ones. Is this correct? But what about CCers with no home address? Can they vote nationally or locally? How does this work? Thanks
