  1. The engine would most likely have been running at the time, so has probably hydrolocked and bent a rod or two, plus some possible piston and crank damage. Alternators will probably need rebuilding too.
  2. A long bow line for pulling in on rivers when single handed is a good piece of advice, however you would need a bollard or cleat for this to be safely used in fast flow conditions.
  3. Thanks to everyone who's shown an interest in this trip, he now has some company for the week, his parents have stepped in to enjoy a free holiday.
  4. Unfortunately, I don't think he has the skills and confidence to single hand, so even the 2 narrow locks would be a scary prospect for him, never mind the 2 barge locks. If I could have joined him, I would.
  5. My friend has a boat hired for a week starting today (Sunday 9th) from Worcester, but his boating partner has fallen ill and cannot go, so he's on his own. If anyone can get to Worcester for a week's boating, please get in touch, all he asks is that you contribute to the fuel costs. You can contact me on here and I'll put you in touch. Jeff
  6. Just putting a fresh reply in here to bump it up the list. If anyone needs a hand crewing in the north west, I'd be happy to help out. Whether it's just a short cruise, or a complete relocation, send me a message and I'll see what I can do. I do work full time, but if you need help with a long distance run, I can usually book a few days holiday at short notice.
  7. Hi, I could probably help you to move the boat, but due to work commitments I wouldn't be available until early September. I'm local to the area and am familiar with the route from Burscough to Wigan.
  8. Hi John, thanks for that, it was good to meet you too. I'm glad you appreciated my tiller skills, and I learnt a couple of tricks off you too. I'd be happy to assist again, if I'm free.
  9. Thanks for the tip, I hadn't given that any consideration, I've now done some updates to my profile and will add more later.
  10. How long is your boat, and what route are you planning to take into Leeds? Anything over 56 feet and you'll start to struggle on the Hudds Broad. If you need a hand at any point, you're welcome to get in touch, as either myself or my regular boating buddy may be able to help out. If you're on Facebook, there is a Wigan Flight Crew group, where you can either ask for assistance, or try to pair up with another boat.
  11. I am a regular boater and am now on Easter break until Weds 8th, if anyone is going out for a cruise in thew North West over the Easter break and requires an extra pair of hands, please get in touch.
  12. I'm currently on holiday until Monday 7th July, with no particular plans. If anyone in the north west of England, or West Yorkshire, requires assistance in moving a boat, please get in touch. I can either assist you directly, or provide my own crew if you are not able to be onboard. We are all experienced crew and have been travelling the canals from Anderton for the last 10 years.
  13. I remember coming through Barbridge once, on the Middlewich Branch stretch. Boats moored both sides, so the navigation is only about 17 feet wide, and a boat coming the opposite direction. As usual, it was windy, and as my bow came back out from the protection of the passing boat it was blown over slightly, meaning that I gently brushed against one of the moored boats. The owner was banging on the window and giving us a load of verbal, didn't come on deck to give me a chance to apologise face to face and explain the situation, so I thought 'If you think you can do any better in these conditions, come and do it yourself!'
  14. "A bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office"

  15. Did you manage to get locked down? If not, I'm based in Manchester and would be happy to help. P.S. I like my bacon well done...
