Thanks for all the good advice which I will take on board and I can see the value of buying a cheap boat first to get a real handle on what narrowboats are all about. Like most things in life there is no substitute for experience and trying to create my dream boat should be more achievable after living with someone else's mistakes as it were. As I said after my week on a boat this Summer I will see how I get on but if I enjoy it as much as I anticipate then the search for my first craft will begin.
As you say Jo I am very close to Mercia Marina and I will make a point of having a look round this weekend and perhaps get to chat to some boaters. I have talked to several already while walking my dogs down to the cafe at Stenson Lock and have been delighted at the friendliness of everyone even when asking loads of questions.
