  6. The other thread seems to have been deleted due to some unknown reason but thanks to the 'Not' so Great levels of service from the last Midlands broker, I found a sales crew who were happy to see a customer, they spent time looking after me and they gave me the confidence that any deposit is not dependent on an indeterminable value. I have placed a deposit on a boat but due to past issues and upcoming action I will keep this one quiet until I take ownership....only 2 weeks to pull out and survey compared to 5-6 last time and an excellent attitude all round. I will be back asking silly questions again, and will hopefully be on the cut proper as a live-aboard' in just a few weeks time at latest, not the boat I initially wanted but am very, very happy with it as a replacement.... ......just sadly way later than I first expected. Can I just thanks once again to all of the crew on here who put up with my and others 'newbie' questions and look forward to buying you a beer or two if you are unlucky enough to bump into me ....out of the water.... The Grumpy Triker is feeeeeling good...

  8. Thank you for the lovely pictures, the very large barge, Parbella is one of mine. All three, plus another L&L short boat, Ribble, that was up ahead, are all moored at Bedford Basin in Leigh and have been to the Lymm Transport Festival. They certainly turn a few heads when out, and the kids love Parbella now we have reinstated her wheel as she looks like a pirate ship!

  9. Rather then spend more money I think I would first try fitting plumbers pendulum type non-return valve between the inlet strainer and the pump. It will probably cost about a fiver and provides a backup to the pump valves. However if Whale are correct its the micro switches then a NRV will not make any difference. However I can not reconcile your symptoms with faulty micro switches.

  11. Well done.......eventualy There are strict rules on re naming boats the two most important are rules regarding manner of name change, I cant recall the act and section but basicaly it is something like " Tee total people are not allowed to change a boats name " and just as important " At the point of change ie signwriting a party must be thrown with the use of moocho alcohol "

  12. In my eyes are boaters are equal, whether they are shiny boaters, scruffy boaters, hire boaters, liveaboards, leisure boaters etc. The one common thing is our love of boats and boating.

  13. However, perhaps the most straightforward? In so far as it's 'just' laying up acres of mat? Great job as always btw.

  14. I got on with the sandblasting the below water line area this weekend.I knew it would be bad and in need of a fair bit of work so not a big surprise but heck it cant be any worse now. I wrapped the hull in tarp to keep the media in from going all over the neighborhood, kitted out with overalls/mask/goggles etc etc i set to. I did break he blast pot as whilst pulling the tanks outside i caught the lower valve and snapped it and as it is a twin tank set up i spent an hour trying to fix that but the 3/8BSP T fitting i snapped was not budging so in the end i capped off the tank and used one. Anyway from the boring bits straight to the results, i only managed to get half the boat done as i ran out of media and i have no sieve to reuse the media again yet. So just swept it up and bagged it for next time.Delamination areas image: https://s5.postimg.org/kte2xvi2v/tn_20170625_173045.jpg What looks like osmosis, there is a few large areas like this. image: https://s5.postimg.org/6loe985dz/tn_20170625_173049.jpg Cavitys and plenty of old patchs that need redoing better. image: https://s5.postimg.org/vk6axal3b/tn_20170625_173101.jpg image: https://s5.postimg.org/vy7mww56v/tn_20170625_173121.jpg This is about 12 inch long image: https://s5.postimg.org/a7yszm153/tn_20170625_173230.jpg The thought here is best to sheath it over up with woven and poly resin to either the top chine or above water line and blend in below the lower strake when i fit it. I am glad i blasted it as once the blast pot was set up correct the blasting showed up all the cavities and area that are thin. Still will go over with a toffee hammer to see if i can fined more.Big job ahead, and the biggest yet i would say.

  15. The gentlemen who look after the car will start it once each month or so and drive it round their car park. Left some nice music on a memory stick in the radio for them. First time we left the car I got a little solar panel charger but the battery still went flat and alternator rusted solid, and brake discs were quite rusted. Driving the car from time to time is a much better option. ............Dave

  16. Do you want to try that again? All black water from a house, ie toilet, showers and sinks , goes into the same system. Storm water from roofs and paves areas goes into a separate system. Wrong again.

  17. Or no additive at all. We have never added any additives to our tank and there is no smell from it at all. Adequate ventilation is the key. Don't add anything then other then wee and poo.

  20. To my mind it's all a matter of degree - it seems to have a swift leak into a hedgerow on your own, but not if of Glastonbury numbers. Elsan's are quite different as most people use Blue which is highly toxic. I made the mistake of assuming that Hurley lock's facilities were connected to the public sewer - it's not. The loos are connected however. My mistake. So the Lavender boat has to collect the Elsan waste and take it away separately to be treated as hazardous waste, which is expensive. Subject to delays as there's only one boat and it covers the whole river. If everybody used a biological additive then the problem would be a matter of 'good practice' rather than a potential public danger. Not that I think it's acceptable anyway.

  21. This is precisely what we do. Wife ( as its a womans jobs like lock wheeling ) takes our dog to the river which is conveniently close to our mooring at least twice a day for long dips in the cherwell. We remove some windows and leave front and rear doors open and curtains closed. Was still awful for a few days recently but I and dog survived.

  23. But incomplete. What he stated was correct for the single example he gave but does not cover such things as lighting and power circuits. There's lots of common sense written here but the full story is not always easy to cover in the space of a single forum post.

  24. It's all just a natural part of the cycle of nature Laurie. Oil is found underground, used and then returns there. The earth provides food, we consume it, mix it with hazardous chemicals and then chuck it in a hedge bottom ...... apparently.

  34. When I started boating it was the done thing to dig a hole at the edge if a field and bury your crap in it, usually direct from the body and not from the bucket we didn't have toilets on board then just a bucket.

  35. The difference being that the C&RT 'Sonnys' would have to comply with the 'British Waterways Acts of Parliament' which are not applicable to 'private waters'. C&RT already has one rogue Enforcement Officer (Nottingham / River Trent area) that has created a lot of bad-feeling, and a number of court cases (some still ongoing) Much stricter enforcement is needed, but 'aggressive, bouncer types' are probably not the best way forward.

  37. The London Boaters Facebook page is a wonderful community of resources on living around London and how to do it in a sustainable way (services, moving, mooring etc). Certainly a range of the top end of the Lea to Milton Keynes is a very popular cruising range and well manageable by a couple on a widebeam. If you do go to London Boaters, try and strike up a conversation with Jess Good, she'll tell it exactly how it is (some good, some bad). I think if you're into London and off-grid(dish) living it's a wonderful lifestyle and the community second to none. It's making your place in that community that's the key to joy or misery.

  41. If the previous owner had finance it is extremely unlikely that it was in the form of a marine mortgage. It is far more likely to have been a personal loan. Therefore no lein on the boat.

  42. All tranformers hum, it is caused by the laminations which make up the iron core vibrating in sympathy with the alternating waveform. Hum should only increase with load. Is it securely mounted and not causing something to vibrate in sympathy?
