  5. If that alternator is a 70amp or more that single belt will probably slip with an almost flat battery. They don't always squeal. It looks like its belt drives the water pump too so I doubt if it was meant to be driven by twin belts. Is there another belt actually on the other alternator. A very basic rough check of oil pressure can be done by Starting up from cold, run for a minute then turning it off but turning the ignition switch back on immediately and timing how long it takes for the oil pressure light to come back on as the pressure leaks away, somewhere around 1/4 to 1/2 minute would be about normal. Then run the engine up to normal working temp for 20 minutes or so and do the same. The light should come back on after around about say 4 to 5 seconds when the pressure has leaked away, All providing that the sender is working ok and the oil viscosity is correct. Very rough method, but if the timings are around these figures I'd say the engine condition is not bad. Pretty tough engines Isuzu's

  7. I have a small Argos one that I bought several years ago for £9.95. Great, especially if you're moving the boat all day by yourself. Load it up first thing, run it from the inverter and by the end of the day you moor up and there's a lovely hot meal waiting for you. I also use mine from shore power. I don't usually bother to brown the meat first in a frying pan as instructed. I found it made very little difference to the end product and just meant more washing up.

  9. Wives can be transferred out of ownership, its often a costly business but overall I think the kind of wife that needs such things as Curling things, hairdryers etc are very expensive to run so cost savings may be had in the long term.

  11. Before the 70 mph speed limit was introduced many express long distance coaches and buses were built specially or re engined for high speed. The likes of Midland Red, Ribble and others were belting up and down motorways at 100mph. The rivalry for the traffic was fierce. I had an uncle who drove coaches for Grey Green at the time and he happened to overtake a Ribble double decker doing 105 mph. The Ribble driver reported him ''snitch'' and my uncle was on the carpet with Grey Green over it. The boss of Grey Green said to my uncle ''When you see another Ribble bus in front of you''Bloody well do it again''.

  12. Just stick yer tongue across the terminals. Tingle = flat. Ouch! = pretty well charged. Flat on your back with a swollen tongue = equalising.

  14. That is going to be far too technical for someone who thought ATF fluid was engine oil!

  15. We dont have to have our higher powered one on for as long. So what would take 10 hours in the 12v cooker would only take about 6 in ours. So the power used is pretty much exactly the same. Even so we don't use ours unless we have a long cruising day planned or we are heading back to the marina so we can plug in.

  26. Ok Ok .... you guys win - i 'll admit it - I m a luddite .! I just like a simple life . I don t want to have to " plan " my washing up. I don t want to fund , install & maintain various pieces of expensive & complex equipment in order to free up the 10 - 15 minutes i might otherwise spend with my hands in the sink . Also , for me ( an opinion only ... ) i like the simplicity , i covet it & cherish it . Life is so bloody complex these days that i consider my boat , my home to be something of an escape from it all . The less complicated the better . The less things to wrong the better . Afterall theres already quite enough to cause a headache when you own a boat . This is , however , my outlook only . My boat , my call . Your boat , your call . I'm happy , your happy . I hope it all works out - im sure it will .... cheers
