  3. I am not concerned about displaying licence discs but I am much more narked about boats with no or deliberately hard to see boat number. When boats severely misbehave, eg doing damage to other boats or mine or the infrastructure it is difficult to involve the relevant authority if the boat can't be readily identified. Reading the tiny licence disc is not usually possible in a confrontation situation. Any boat found persistently without a number should be surcharged at licence renewal time. The boat name is no use, it is usually Kingfisher.

  5. This from 'Your Questions Answered', Boaters' Update 10 Mar 2017: Do I still need to display my licence discs? Yes. This extract from licence Terms & Conditions explains why: ‘It is very important – and a legal requirement – that you display your Licence. Although we don’t need this for licence checking purposes (the index number tells us if the boat is correctly licensed), it demonstrates to other boaters that you are complying with our requirements and not evading your responsibility to contribute to the cost of maintaining the Waterways.' Our boat is licenced so that we can use the waterways legally and in line with CaRT's terms & conditions etc. CaRT know this fact from their licence database. It is a contract between me and CaRT and nothing whatsoever to do with hi viz Hitlers (with or without clipboards), curtain twitchers and others of such ilk. Am I wrong in thinking this?

  11. My understanding, although some on here get involved in rotational energy and goodness knows what. is that its the result of an almost instantaneous collapse of the magnet field in the stator inducing a voltage spike into the stator (generating coils). Having received a belt from both horns and small 12V relay coils as they were turned off I can well believe that to be the case. That voltage spike (on a 9 diode machine) will also be applied to the rotor. Now how much damping the inductance of the rotor will achieve I do not know if it forces any more current through the rotor that in turn will give an increase in stator voltage. No idea how they all interact though.

  12. Extinguishers with an indicator are usual "stored pressue" types. Unscrewing the top will release the pressure rendering the extinguisher unservicable. There is also the risk of personal injury, and one hell of a mess to clear up. Compacted power can be prevented by regularly removing the extinguisher from its clip and giving it a good shake whilst holding it upside down. Failing that hold it upside down and tap the base with a rubber mallet.

  13. Yes I think you are probably right. I am the first to admit that in my early days of narrowboating we made some humungous mistakes and luckily survived them all That though is what I sometimes find annoying when some boaters slag off other boaters for doing what they did when they were new such as some hirers although I have met quite a few hirers with much more narrowboat experience than boat owners.

  14. I think this is right! To be honest, we pretty well gave up on the 'big sales sites' when looking for a boat, because after much searching, researching and narrowing the field, at least half of private sellers we contacted never bothered to respond. It was becoming a waste of time. Another pitfall dealing with the private sellers was a tendancy to exaggerate the condition and value of their boats. For us, not having a vehicle and dependent on making journeys to visit boats by train and/or bus, some of these became expensive wastes of time! Ultimately we found the boats at good marina brokerages to be fairly and competitively priced (they don't want them sitting around), they had people who responded to emails or phone calls promptly, they could give reasonably good feedback about a boat -- and often they would check on a detail or two if we were serious about coming out to see it. For what it's worth, we went up to Braunston Marina to look at two boats we were interested in. Both had sold before we arrived. But a quirky narrowboat had just come in that weekend and wasn't on the books or website yet. It turned out to be our 'dream boat'. So we made an offer ... and a counter offer ... had it surveyed ... and ended up with a new home.

  15. Since doing away with the need to display a tax disc in cars the figure for car tax evasion has doubled.

  21. Sure but it's all about social norms etc. Of course someone could create a counterfeit licence, but it is the general effect on the majority that is relevant, not the creation of a flawless system. Your case is abnormal since your boat is not normally licenced - as a proportion of all boats you must be a 1%er or less. You and Stuart seem obsessed with the "busybody" factor and can't see beyond it, but that is just a creation of your own imagination, it is not the thinking behind CRT's request.

  24. The number of posts I see seems to be holding up well. Admittedly I don't have numbers but I am find as much if not more to read. So if numbers have fallen off those left are IMO posting lots of interesting stuff.

  28. CRT have repeatedly indicated they are no longer interested in a boat name, (which is, of course, not a uniqed identifier), but, being pedantic, not displaying it is still a breach of the relevant bye-laws. Being even more pedantic, just about everybody keeping a boat on CRT waters is in any case probably in breach of the bye-laws, unless their boat name and index number are kept illuminated at night.....

  29. At Foxton it really is quite simple to check - assuming we are talking about an out-of-hours situation, or when limited traffic is expected, you only need to check the flight of five. Going down that is dead easy - you just look from the top gate. At the bottom, you have to tie up and walk a few metres to look. Hardly rocket science and no more than you would do at a single lock (you do check that a boat is not just about to come the other way, don't you?) I have not single handed either flight but I would guess that it is especially easy - there are the usual lock ladders in each chamber. As with any lock, single handed may be a little slower but if a boater coming the other way (or even from behind) is fussed then they can always offer to lend a hand! At a busy time there will be more than enough helpers around. The problem usually is in keeping them under control but most really appreciate being given the chance especially if clearly instructed. I cannot see much difference at Watford.

  31. Is there any ads on the Canalboat website I couldn't see any there? I'd say Apolloduck and Waterways world are my top two. What I find looking on the independent's though is boats appear there 1st and if they don't move them initially then they put them up on either or both of those two. My search list is as follows; http://vcmarine.co.uk/inland-waterway-boats-for-sale/ http://www.longportbrokerage.co.uk/narrowboatsforsale http://www.boatshop24.co.uk/motorboats/canal-narrow-boats http://www.tewkesbury-boat-sales.co.uk http://www.sankeymarine.co.uk/boat-sales# http://www.boatshopuk.co.uk http://www.boatwrecks.com/power.asp http://www.devizesmarina.co.uk/results.php?exeSearch=true&searchSaleRent http://www.tingdeneboatsales.net/search-results?used=used&boattype=All&minprice=Min&maxprice=Max http://www.theyachtmarket.com/static/boattype_narrowboat_9.html http://www.alvecotemarina.co.uk/brokerage/for-sale/ http://www.nortoncanesboatbuilders.co.uk/home/index.php/boats-for-sale http://www.calcuttboats.com/saleboat.html http://www.ashwoodmarina.co.uk/brokerage/used-boats-for-sale?layout=edit&id=90 http://canallist.co.uk/narrowboats-for-sale/ http://www.marineserviceschirk.co.uk/boats-sale/ Then there are the bigger ones Wilton. https://www.whiltonmarina.co.uk/used-narrowboats/default.aspx Rugby boat sales http://rugbyboats.co.uk http://www.thesalespontoon.co.uk/search http://www.abcboatsales.com/boat-sales/ http://www.abnb.co.uk http://greathaywoodboatsales.co.uk https://bwml.co.uk/brokerage/ https://www.venetianmarina.co.uk/used-narrowboats/default.aspx http://www.aqueductbrokerage.co.uk http://newandusedboat.co.uk/used-boat-search/ http://www.swanleybrokerage.com http://www.lakelandleisureboatsales.co.uk Blimey looks a lot written down! some of those are bookmarks some from many hours of Internet digging and off the top of my head! Apolloduck is still the place though set up an account and an alert then as soon as a new ad is posted that fits your criteria you get a mail and can be on to it. Same goes for boats and outboards and all those type sites. Ade
