  2. some PC folks have chosen to label smacks as abuse. that just confuses the issue with serious physical or sexual abuse which are done for the pleasure of the abuser. silly really, smacking and the like is the way many of the higher animals teach their young in the wild and it was the way humans taught their offspring for millenia until the PC brigade arrived, potentially causing a reversion in the progress of civilisation.

  7. I actually see the sentiment that you have expressed above as being just the sort of thing that they will use to argue against your continued involvement. Your "determination" gives a clear picture that you see this as "your" fight as well as Leigh's fight. CRT will (not entirely unreasonably) seek to argue that your involvement goes beyond helping Leigh, and that you have an agenda regarding CRT's powers that actually amounts to you being the prime mover in the litigation.

  9. I bought a boat on Friday at 10am (doing the 'What the hell have i done dance followed with the 'OMG,OMG,OMG' shuffle Before the CanalWorld Illuminati jump in waving there rolling pins and blue flamingos. I never posted about looking at it before because every time i do post that i really love a boat, you lot jinx it Here's my babe All rough and rugged on the outside And blooming gorgeous on the inside (like Brian Blessed's belly button) I even have a big red engine Everyone knows that 'red' goes faster, plus it's accessible in any weather It also has one of those 'move things' in the dry bit And that thing that is named after a vegetable that looks like a brain and taste better with cheese And i can relax next to my stove while i plot world domination Did i mention that it's clean, damp and mold free, and the engine bay is tasty and dry Look, come closer, taste it The owner is leaving me loads of tools and household products and items. It's got a carpet and chairs ropes, pins, keys.....pretty much everything a girl can need.....except the spiders....she's leaving the spiders Did i mention that i have donated the rest of my money to Amazon, now the forest is safe for generations to come All it took was the stalking of Mr Dave who kindly let me see his boat (wouldn't let me keep his cat ) he also showed me all the bits and bobs that go into how a boat works and let me stalk him with images of 30ft boats and repeatedly telling me the down side of owning a craft that size (i only need telling 30 or so times) As for Mr Enfield who took over 3mins and 12 seconds in peak times and at off peak times took up to one hour to reply (he's a brute. He walks around with his top hat, wax mustache and cape as dark as night, tying innocent newbies to train tracks). He said he would send me to the work house if i didn't get the right boat (i cried onto my crust of bread) He let me stalk him as well and kindly and repeatedly explained that my choices were two steps away from evolving into some type of mutant hybrid lemon. I told him he was wrong, then he told me why he was right and i ignored it and said it was pretty and he pointed out a few facts...and i had a huff Thank you chaps from looking at my boats and not choking on tears of laughter, thank you for looking at surveys equipment and endless questions, thank you for not removing the GPS devices that i attached to you while you slept (i thought they may have hidden from me) Any newbies out there, find a person who knows boats, and when you find them, cling to em and never let them go......even if you have to buy a storage trunk (remember air holes) NEVER LET THEM GO Now i have to do another sort out of stuff that i am taking (that will actually fit) and stuff that i will have to say goodbye to. Should be moving onboard this week. Did i mention it's BLUE Before you ask (you never do ) Everything you see in the pics (except the handbag) comes with the boat. Had a survey last year

  10. Hi Some of you may be familiar with thread in which i explained why I wanted to live afloat and the issues that Mrs Neal had expressed interest in. In the interests of balance, I was wondering the reasons that people who used to live aboard (but still hang around canal boat forums!) had ceased to do it, what they regretted at the end and how long they did it for before moving back on land and any adjustments that they had going back. In other words, what can possibly go wrong both to end the dream and re-establishing "normal" life. Over to you.......

  12. Finally got around to doing some work on fitting this engine.. Made a starter motor bracket to hold the Volvo starter. Fuel line. Home made exhaust... Wiring next, and probably have to shim the starter motor to get it to engage correctly. Casp'

  14. Plenty can go wrong but it is considered bad form, by some, to voice such examples on CWDF. I have been called defeatist in the past for doing so. Met a lady, who lived on her boat, at All Oaks Wood on the North Oxford a few years ago for whom it had gone considerably wrong. She had no house to fall back on. Mrs T and myself are fortunate enough to be able to have a boat and a house on the land. By profession we were both Project Managers, for different companies, and part of managing projects is the "What if scenario". If something can go wrong it will, you just need a plan to deal with it. Also in life we will hopefully grow old and to me, a house is more convenient, safer place to live when I am old and doddery.

  15. It will all sort itself out I slipped once and my leg went into the water between the bow and the jetty. It hurt a bit as I had to push the boat away from pressing on my leg against the jetty. I have a rubber mat outside now so not slippery when wet. The only thing I have lost in the water was a spirit level, no use on a boat though, but need one for work, so bought another! James

  16. Congratulations on your boat purchase Miss Max. I bet your excited but a bit nervous at the same time, I was beaming with happiness when I moved on board and nervous at the same time as I hadn't ever, even started my boat or gone out on one. I did the RYA course out of Stourport and really enjoyed the days training. When I finally set off to my Marina 54 miles away the nervousness soon evaporated and I got into a routine single handing the locks. I really enjoyed it even though it was wet and muddy. You will soon feel very at home, especially once you have your things just so and if you ever get a problem you can always ask on here or ask a fellow boater. When I was moving my boat I didn't have a trolley to get coal, empty the elsan and a fellow boater at Great Haywood put them in his wheel barrow for me and wheeled it, which was very kind of him. If constant cruising I would seriously consider solar panels and a genny and a smartguage. I would love to CC but need to be based at a resi mooring for work, so quite envious if you are going to CC as I would love to explore the network and meet new people. James

  19. That Willow Wren link is a perfect demonstration of what we are saying, especially that you spend the majority of the time looking forward so you pick up instantly that the boat is about to move out of line and correct it with small movements of the tiller. Also important is to NEVER NEVER stand beside the tiller in reverse, as the rudder can easily decide to swing hard over, knocking anyone in the way of the tiller into the water where that propellor is whiring around Tam

  20. And I suspect it was answered before too. Have you ever tried climbing up a rope ladder? Does it even sink when you unroll it? If you try this I think you will find yourself less confident about its usefulness. You really do need something rigid that protrudes down at least a metre for someone to get their foot onto for it to be any real help, especially if the person in the water is no longer fully compos mentis from shock or hurting themselves. 21. The farmer charges £5 a night to moor here.never used to but as usual the chancers mooring for weeks on end and spreading rubbish around the field with cattle in put paid to that..bear in mind unless its a EA 24 hour mooring all the land is private and the farmer cando as he chooses regarding boats moored to his land

  25. While I may not agree wholeheartedly with your first three points, there is a case for some form of physical punishment, not using implements though. My wife taught secondary schools through the 70's 80's and 90's and found that discipline went down hill throughout this period. It got so bad that parents would come into school and take their children out of detention class, which was the final punishment left to teachers after everything else was banned. This made it impossible, because if one child was removed, how do you keep the others in. I remember that I tried my best not to let my parents know I was disciplined in class because I'd get worse at home for being naughty. These days some parents assault teachers for trying to hold order. Bob

  28. You could rebuild them as cruise-through restaurants for boaters. Get your lunch handed straight to you at the tiller.

  29. DNA testing is now quite cheap. I believe all dogs should have their DNA registered on a national database and then offending owners could be fined. This already happens in some USA apartments. (if you want to keep a dog you have to agree to paying and registering the dog's DNA with the building's management company). Some dog owners will only bag poop if someone is watching; as soon as they are out of sight the bag is dropped or hung from a tree. These people should be named and shamed!

  39. All this talk about fenders around props has reminded me about coal sacks, I've had several of these round my prop at different times, should we consider coal sacks in the same way as fenders? May have to start a thread demanding nobody uses coal sacks and start mocking those that do.Phil
